Good to know

Is Chickadee available yet?

Chickadee is preparing for its first release. There isn’t a public App Store download yet. These answers describe the current app; details may change before launch.

Where is my information stored?

Start with local storage on your device. If you want to use Chickadee across devices, turn on optional iCloud sync in Settings → Data & storage → iCloud sync. Use the same Apple account on both devices. Sync takes effect after restarting the app.

My changes haven’t appeared on another device.

Check that sync is enabled on both devices and that they use the same Apple account originally linked to the database. Check your connection and available iCloud storage, then allow time for changes to arrive. Review the iCloud sync screen for a message. Don’t delete or reinstall the app as a troubleshooting step; export a copy first and email us if you need help.

Can I take my information with me?

Yes. Open Settings → Export your data for readable Markdown or Markdown + photos in a ZIP. These exports cannot be imported into Chickadee. For recovery, use Settings → Backup & recovery → Create backup. This saves a separate JSON file with people, notes, history, and photos. Later, choose Recover people from a backup, review its contents, and select missing people to recover. Existing profiles are never replaced or merged; possible duplicates are blocked. Previously saved archived people remain archived. With iCloud enabled, recovered people sync, so allow sync to finish and recover from only one device at a time. Backups have a 128 MB limit. Neither backups nor exports are encrypted by Chickadee; save them somewhere private.

Can I change how often reminders arrive?

Yes. In Settings, choose the number of days between reminders and either a fixed time or a random time within your chosen window. Reminders are optional, and their preferences are specific to each device. If nothing arrives, check Chickadee’s notification permission in your device settings and any Focus settings that may silence it.

What if I want to reconnect later?

On Reach Out, swipe a person’s row to reveal Reschedule and Archive. Reschedule changes their next-contact date. Archive removes them from Reach Out and clears that date while keeping notes and history. Find them again through Settings → Archived people.

How do I delete someone permanently?

Open Archived people, select the person, and choose Permanently delete. This removes their profile and associated history from the active database and can sync the deletion to other devices. Older safety copies, device backups, and exports may retain earlier information. See the privacy policy for details.

Does app lock protect my exports too?

No. App lock protects access within Chickadee on that device using Apple’s device authentication. Someone with the device passcode can unlock it. Exported files and portable backups are separate and are not encrypted by Chickadee. Notifications may still appear while the app is locked.

How do I dictate a note?

Tap a note field and use the microphone on your device’s keyboard, if available. Chickadee saves the resulting text. Dictation availability and privacy are controlled by your keyboard provider and device settings.

The app says its sync settings couldn’t be read.

Your local information may still be available, while sync and restoration are paused to protect your original account connection. Use Export your data to save a copy, then email us. Keep the app installed and do not manually delete its data files.
